To be a successful freelance writer requires two things: First, you have to really love to write. Second, you have to understand the business of it.
I found my love for writing at a very young age. When I was a young red-headed kid growing up in the Denver suburbs, I would take my dad’s National Geographic books and copy them by hand, word-for-word. My handwriting was meticulous and when I completed a page I would hold it up and admire my work.
One day my dad came home with one of those cool new personal computer things, an Apple II C! By this time, I had learned how to type. With a book on my lap, my fingers would type away, just copying every word onto that computer screen.
Soon I began writing my own stories just for fun. I didn’t usually show them to anyone. It was just for my own entertainment. While my classmates dreaded the essay question tests, I loved them. It was just another chance for me to write… about anything.
But, as I went on to college, somewhere along the line, I was discouraged about the idea of applying my writing skills and interests towards a career. Perhaps I was turned off by stories of starving writers who couldn't make a living, or reputations of cut-throat business environments in the journalism field. Whatever it was, I decided to pursue a business degree instead. Besides, I wanted to make money, not be a disheveled writer with no money and no life, I thought.
I earned my business degree in Marketing and established a successful ten-year career as a middle manager for a large corporation. It was a great experience, a real adventure in corporate life. But, ultimately, it was not right for me. I had too much wanderlust and too much pent up independence.
So, I got back to one of my true interests—writing. I splashed in head-first, sink or swim, and here I am. Writing is what I was meant to do.
I hope you can give me a chance to write for you. Please take a look at my list of writing services, browse some of my samples, and feel free to give me a ring or drop me an email if you have any questions.
